Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (JHBMC) is a 700 bed teaching hospital and a member of the Johns Hopkins Medical System. A full spectrum of therapy services are provided to patients from 23 weeks to 103 years by a team of over 100 therapists. JHBMC Rehabilitation programs are regionally and nationally known for burns, complex strokes, geriatrics, and pelvic floor disorders.
Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center committed to a comprehensive electronic medical record that is fully integrated with all hospital operations. The Rehabilitation services department was in need of a Rehabilitation focused documentation and billing software system that would interface with the host system. Several parameters were clearly identified and included the following system requirements; must support three disciplines, include Acute Inpatient and Outpatient, Acute Comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitation (ACIR), chronic hospital, and SNF services must be supported. Lastly, specialized programs (i.e., mental health) must be accommodated and two additional criteria were to provide for point of care documentation and Outpatient scheduling.
In addition to meeting the JHBMC electronic objective, the Rehabilitation department identified three additional goals including assuring regulatory compliance, reconciling insurance authorization with a documented note & bill, and improving data collection & outcome reports. All of these objectives would result in increased financial and operational health of the department.
Prior to the MediLinks implementation the JHBMC Rehabilitation services department operated a paper based system requiring manual charting, billing, scheduling, record keeping, and audits. These processes were inefficient and cumbersome.
The MediLinks Phase I implementation was completed in June 2005. This implementation provided a live wireless environment in the Acute Inpatient and Outpatient Rehabilitation services departments. The MediLinks scheduling module and full template build were implemented in the Rehabilitation environment.
Phase II is planned for late 2008. This will include bringing the ACIR, chronic hospital, skilled nursing facility (SNF), and satellite special programs on line.
After completing a one year ROI study, Johns Hopkins Bayview experienced the following results:
