North Colorado Medical Center (NCMC) is located in Greeley, Colorado and is an extension of the Banner Health System. It is the only hospital serving Weld County which covers 3,999 square miles (population of 210,000). NCMC is the primary fullservice tertiary facility and Level II Trauma Center for Northern and Eastern Colorado, Southern Wyoming, and Western Nebraska.
NCMC has 326 licensed beds, including a 20-bed Rehabilitation unit, a 16-bed transitional care unit, and an Inpatient/Outpatient Rehabilitation staff of approximately 100, providing care to pediatric through geriatric populations. NCMC has an onsite community-based Outpatient Clinic, and a Sports Medicine Clinic as well as three offsite community clinics.
Prior to the MediLinks implementation, the Outpatient department used manual documentation & dictation to chart all activities. The previous outpatient system used a combination of three computerized systems and eight different appointment books. This caused scheduling errors as well as late, inaccurate, and misplaced charts. Inpatient Services documented manually and billed through a nursing computer program. Inpatient scheduled their caseload manually each day using a scheduling board.
Now NCMC Outpatient Services has one system for charting, charging, and scheduling, as well as electronic documentation. Outpatient Rehabilitation has centralized access to all schedules, documentation, and data collection/extraction (reports). MediLinks simplifies scheduling for multiple discipline therapy visits. Inpatient Services now charts and bills through MediLinks via Citrix access throughout the hospital. They currently continue to schedule therapists via their scheduling board but are looking at using work lists instead.
Using MediLinks, the therapists have designed templates which meet their needs as well as meeting JCAHO requirements/practice standards. All MediLinks charting is available via outbound interfaces to nursing/physicians on CareManager and in the official electronic medical record, QuickChart.
NCMC will continue with Phase Two of this implementation to provide a wireless environment. This will include a mobile solution that will enable a clinician to chart at the bedside and capture results while synchronizing with the MediLinks application.
The Banner Good Samaritan Outpatient Rehabilitation department has been incorporated into the existing NCMC database. This will provide centralized administration and support while providing each facility with its own unique customizable application.
After completing a one year ROI study, NCMC experienced the following results:
