Chandler, AZ – January 27, 2012 – Did you know more than 70,000 young adults are diagnosed with cancer every year? Susan Mortensen Turley was among that startling statistic. The 25-year-old event coordinator at MediServe was months into her marriage when she started experiencing intense stomach pains. A few weeks later upon a trip to the doctor, she was diagnosed with stage 4 (the most advanced stage) colon cancer; it was a diagnosis that even took the doctor by surprise considering her young age. Just five months later, after surgeries and rounds of chemo, Susan lost her battle on Dec. 5, 2008.
Following her death, Susan’s friends and family formed the Susan Mortensen Turley Foundation. To honor her love for running, the foundation set up an annual run to raise money for One Weekend Away, a chance for young adult cancer patients and their families to enjoy a no-cost restful weekend where, for a few days, they can escape the all-consuming pressures of their illness and enjoy a peaceful surrounding.
On February 18, the 3rd Annual Susan’s Run will take place at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Ariz. You can register to take part in the 5K, 10K or 1 mile family fun run. Events kick off at 8 a.m. Pre-registration discounts are available through February 13. If you don’t live in the Arizona area, or can’t attend, you can still participate! Go to the website and get a T-shirt to show your support! Those who pre-register are automatically entered to win an iPad2.
MediServe is proud to be a sponsor for Susan’s Run, as this foundation runs deep for the MediServe family. In addition to working in the marketing department at MediServe, Susan’s father, Bruce, founded the company in 1985 when she was just a little girl.
Susan Mortensen Turley was born in 1983. She grew up in Chandler, AZ, and was a star athlete at Corona del Sol High School. She went on to run competitively for the University of Arizona in Tucson for 4 years, and was named to the PAC-10 All-Academic Team. Following graduation, she returned to the Phoenix area where she worked at MediServe. She married Justin Turley on Jan. 3, 2008 and lived in Mesa until her death.
