From the cutting edge of technology, I happened upon an article last week discussing a breakthrough in short-term patient oxygenation. Boston Children’s Hospital has “developed tiny, oxygen-filled microparticles that can be injected straight into a person’s veins in order to quickly oxygenate a person’s blood.” The solution is made up of extremely small bubbles of oxygen wrapped up in fatty molecules prepared for syringe or IV. The therapy is intended as a stop gap measure where cases of severe heart or lung injury would produce prolonged cerebral hypoxia; until other interventions can be applied. Pretty cool stuff!
